History of TAR
Clubs in Arizona
by Jen Barber
Lois Fitch, a
former high school history teacher, started the Teenage Republicans over
30 years ago. She felt that the young people were on the outside
of the political process and decided to find a way to include them. So
she started the Saguaro High School TARS Club in Scottsdale. In 3
months it had 60 members.
The success of
the Saguaro Club got the attention of the AZ Republican Party. Lois was
asked to take TARS throughout the state. As a result, she became the
State TARS Advisor and that is still her role with TARS today. She's
also a member of the Lincoln Republican Women and the AzFRW Youth
Organization Coordinator.
Presently, the
12 TARS clubs statewide are mainly on high school campuses- 2 are
homeschooled. Like AzFRW, TARS has a state federation with state
officers elected each year at their state convention.
