ARW has an exciting agenda for 2010.
The New Year was launched with the Annual Christmas Party and
Installation of
2010 Board of Officers on December 5, 2009. ARW
was honored to have NFRW 2nd VICE PRESIDENT Rae Lynne Chornenky
of Arizona perform the installation ceremony.
We will be holding several debates and special events to help us
get to know all of the candidates and issues that will be on the
ballot in the primary and general election this year. Our hope
is to do everything we can to educate and inspire our members.
Rep. Kirk Adams, Speaker of the House, was our guest for our
January meeting. Speaker Adams gave us a very informative
legislative update which was followed by questions from our
members. This first meeting of the year was standing room only
at our long time meeting venue. Consequently, the Board voted
to move our meetings from the Phoenix fire Station Community
Room to the Grace Inn Phoenix.
ARW hosted a Debate with Candidates for Arizona
Corporation Commission at our February Chocolate and Politics
meeting. Each candidate gave us a better understanding of the
importance of the AZ Corporation Commission and their goals if
elected.
Once again, our attendance nearly doubled to almost 100 members
and guests at our new location.
The Clerk of the Superior Court, Michael Jeanes will be our
guest speaker in March.
April will be a special event as ARW hosts a Breakfast Meeting
and Gubernatorial Debate.
As Republicans, we look forward to a great year in 2010!
CWRW -
Cactus Wren Republican Women, Judy
Sides, President
We have had a busy year. Each of our meetings has been
targeting candidates that are running for either state or
national office.
Colleen Crump, Cactus Wrens Program chair, has done an
outstanding job of contacting and getting many of the
candidates that are vying for office. Februarys program had
the candidates for Corporation Commission: Brenda Burns,
Gary Pierce, and Barry Wong. March was Margaret Dugan and
John Huppenthal for Superintendent of Department of
Education. April had four of the candidates running for
Governor: John Munger, Buz Mills, Dean Martin and Hugh
Kealer. Mays program gave us the opportunity to meet some
of the candidates for Arizona Congressional District 3. We
had Sam Crump, Leann Hull, Steve Moak, Paulina Morris,
Vernon Parker, Jim Waring, Ed Winkler and Ben Quayle. Our
June meeting was a meet the candidate night along with a
silent auction.
As this is an election year we will not be going dark.
Our July meeting will be dedicated to celebrating the
birthday or our Country.
Our Community Involvement is with "Angels on Patrol" a
non-profit organization that works with families and
especially children that have had experienced some trauma
through abuse or neglect. The officers on patrol help these
families as best they can. We are donating back packs and
supplies.
CRW - Chandler
Republican Women - Ann Caswell, President
Chandler Republican Women are making a difference in our City,
as we increase our membership and have many of our members
participating as Precinct Committeemen - all striving for one
goal - to make sure that Republicans are elected!! Hence, our
theme when we marched in the Annual Ostrich Festival Parade in
March, was "Rounding Up Republicans".
March meeting: Vanessa Whitener, Candidate for LD21. Program:
Candidates for AZ Corporation Commission - Brenda Burns, Gary
Pierce and Barry Wong; April - Susan Udall, AzFRW Education
Chairman, who gave a passionate presentation for the Education
project. Program: Senator Jay Tibshraeny, running unopposed
for Chandler Mayor; May - Cecilia Cuismano, representative for
Bill Montgomery, Candidate for Maricopa County Attorney, who
presented Mr. Montgomery's reasons for running for this office.
Program: Ward Connerly, Author and President of the American
Civil Rights Institute. Mr. Connerly, a dynamic speaker, was
available for pictures and the signing of his book, "Lessons
From my Uncle James". June - Forum: Candidates for State
Treasurer - Barbara Leff, Doug Ducey and Thayer Verschoor.
Chandler Republican Women were also represented at the Day at
the Legislature in March and participated with Ahwatukee
Republican Women (host club) and Gilbert Republican Women at a

MRW - Mesa
Republican Women - Sherry Pierce, President
“Individually we CAN make a difference; Together we DO make a
difference!”
With 2010 being an election year, one of MRW’s main goals was to
make sure our members (and guests) had the opportunity to hear
from as many candidates as possible. Our last report included
January’s meeting which was with candidates for AZ Corporation
Commission and February’s meeting which was with candidates for
AZ Supt. of Public Instruction and LD 19 Senate. Here are the
candidates we’ve heard from since our last AzFRW meeting:
March –
Candidates for AZ Supt. of Publican Instruction: Margaret
Dugan, John Huppenthall.
April –
Candidates for AZ State Treasurer: Ted Carpenter, Doug Ducey,
Barbara Leff (Thayer Voosher was expected but didn’t
attend)
May –
Candidates for Governor: Dean Martin, John Munger (Jan Brewer
declined)
June
–
Candidates for U.S. Senate: Jim Deakin, JD Hayworth
July –
No Meeting
Upcoming Meeting:
August –
Remaining candidates for Governor: Buzz Mills, Matt Jette, Tom
Gordon
We are also proud to partner with Gilbert RW to host “Unite
2010” which is a kick-off for
the general
election for all the Republican winners of the primary.
MRW’s Caring For America programs have been going really well.
We collected several thousand dollars that were donated to Wheel
Chairs for Haiti to help with the post earthquake efforts.
Beginning in May our project changed to Sunshine Acres
Children’s Home in Mesa. We’ve collected many school supplies
as well as over $230 cash to purchase more. Our members are
more than willing to participate and are always very generous.
Although we’re not quite back to our 2009 numbers, we’re close
and are increasing our membership each month. (We lost several
members to a good cause.....Gilbert RW was created. Congrats
Gilbert!)
Very recently seven of us (MRW members) met with a reporter from
the L.A. Times, Mark Barabak. He interviewed us for an article
he was writing on Arizona’s illegal immigration issues and John
McCain (he has followed and reported on McCain for many years).
Mark was fair and accurate in reporting and wrote what we felt
was a really good article. It was a good experience and we were
proud to represent the views of many Republican women. (June 8th
L.A. Times, front page)
MRW will continue to empower its members through education and
information that will help them to “make a difference”,
especially in this upcoming election. We appreciate all the
help AzFRW has been with their great ideas, helps and
organization. We’re very proud to be affiliated with them as
well as with the National Federation. Together we really DO
make a difference!!!
TRW -
Tempe Republican Women's Club - Sue
Pullar, President
Tempe Republican Women are actively campaigning for various
candidates running for office. Two of our members are
candidates. Wendy Rogers is running for State Senate, and Mary
Lou Taylor is a candidate for School Board for the Tempe Union
High School District. In March, member Onnie Shekerjian was
elected to a second term in Tempe City Council.
Our two projects are packages from Home and TARS. In December,
members packed boxes for our service men and women in Iraq and
Afghanistan. Another packing will be held in June. Our club
contributed $500 to Coronoa TARS to help with expenses for
students to attend the National TARS convention in Washington,
D.C. in July. The TARS have been busy with many fund raisers to
earn money for their trip.
The programs at our regular meetings were interesting and
varied. February featured Ken Bennett, Secretary of State, with
his "Kleenex" presentation of the budget. A gubernatorial panel
with all the candidates participating was the March meeting.
Ward Connerly gave a rousing talk in April and sold copies of
his book, "Lessons from My Uncle James". John Huppenthal,
candidate for Superintendent of Public Instruction, spoke in
May, as did Senator Sylvia Allen, who presented the topic of cap
and trade.
A luncheon at the Sheraton Airport Hotel in Tempe on June 12
takes the place of our regular meeting. Palo Verde Republican
Women will present "Tribute to Ole' Glory", presented by the
Patriot Players. In May, a member hosted a pot luck. The pot
luck was so successful with many guests attending that another
pot luck is planned for July. We will resume our regular
meeting in August.
